What Residents and
Families Tell Us

The best way to understand Tao Yuen is through the people who call it home β€” and the families who trusted us with someone they love.

Wong Lai-Kuen

Resident, Residence Plan

I have been at Tao Yuen for about fourteen months now. The calligraphy sessions on Wednesdays have become the part of my week I most look forward to. Sifu Chan never makes anyone feel they have to produce something perfect β€” it is about the practice, not the result. The meals are thoughtful and the garden is peaceful in the mornings.

Chan Tsz-Wai

Son of a resident

Finding the right place for my mother was something we thought about for almost two years. The honest reason we chose Tao Yuen was that nobody pushed us β€” there was no sales pressure, just a straightforward tour and an honest conversation. My mother was settled within her first three weeks, which surprised even her. She still calls it "the garden house."

Lam Fong-Yi

Resident, Cultural Studio

I joined the Cultural Studio because I wanted to pick up calligraphy again after a very long gap. I had not practised since my school years. The sessions are small enough that I do not feel self-conscious, and the Cantonese opera afternoons are something I had not expected to enjoy as much as I do. Good use of a Thursday.

Ho Mei-Shan

Daughter of a resident

What stands out is how the staff remember small things. My father prefers his tea without milk and likes to sit facing the garden. That information was clearly passed along and honoured without him having to repeat himself. It is a small thing but it makes a significant difference when you are getting used to a new place.

Tang Po-Kwan

Resident, Companion Circles

I come in three mornings a week for the Companion Circles. I live nearby and did not want a full residential arrangement β€” I just wanted some company and something to do. The mahjong group on Tuesday afternoons is genuinely enjoyable, and nobody minds if you miss a week. I have made two good friends here, which I did not expect.

Ng Kwok-Bun

Husband of a resident

We were anxious about the transition. My wife had lived in the same flat for forty years. The Resident Relations manager β€” Siu-Fong β€” spent real time with us before the move and stayed in touch throughout the first month. My wife still misses some things about her old home, but she is settled here and that is what matters.

How Residents Settled In

A few longer stories from residents and families, shared with their permission.

From Quiet Isolation to Weekly Mahjong

Mrs. Yip, 79 β€” joined Companion Circles in early 2024

The situation

After her husband's passing, Mrs. Yip spent most of her days alone in her Pok Fu Lam flat. Her daughter noticed she was withdrawing from contact with neighbours and had stopped going to the market.

How Tao Yuen helped

Mrs. Yip joined the Companion Circles programme three mornings a week. She started with tea sessions before joining the mahjong group once she felt at ease. Her daughter arranged this as a gentle trial with no pressure to continue if it did not suit.

After six months

Mrs. Yip now attends four times a week and has taken on an informal host role in the Tuesday sessions. Her daughter says the change in how she talks about her days has been noticeable.

"I was not sure it was for me at first. But the third week I came, I won at mahjong and everybody made a fuss about it. That was that."

A Move They Had Put Off for Three Years

Mr. Cheung, 83 β€” moved to the Residence Plan in late 2023

The situation

Mr. Cheung's two children had been discussing a residential option for several years. He was independently capable but finding solo cooking and housekeeping increasingly tiring. He was resistant to the idea of a large institutional home.

How Tao Yuen helped

The family visited twice before Mr. Cheung agreed to a one-month trial. The Residence Plan gave him meals, a clean room and access to activities with no obligation. His preference for quiet mornings and later rising was accommodated from the first week.

After one year

He has remained on the full plan and his family visits regularly on weekends, sometimes joining him for Saturday lunch. The one-month trial became permanent.

"I expected to feel like a guest. I do not. I think this is just where I live now."
