Our Story
Honouring the Years
That Matter Most
Tao Yuen was shaped by a simple conviction: that older adults deserve more than maintenance — they deserve a life full of texture, warmth and personal meaning.
Back to HomeHow Tao Yuen Came to Be
Tao Yuen — which takes its name from the classical notion of a garden in full bloom — was established by a small group of people who had each watched a parent or grandparent spend their later years in an environment that felt functional but not warm. They believed Hong Kong could offer something different: a place where daily life feels genuinely full rather than merely supported.
The community opened in the Mid-Levels because the neighbourhood itself reflects the values the founders had in mind — unhurried, connected to nature through the nearby hillside, and familiar to longtime Hong Kong residents. The house at 27 Magazine Gap Road was chosen for its proportions: large enough to hold a real community, small enough that no resident ever feels anonymous.
In the years since opening, Tao Yuen has remained deliberately small. We have not expanded for expansion's sake. The priority has always been depth of care over breadth — knowing each resident's preferences, keeping the cultural calendar alive and meaningful, and making sure that staff continuity allows real relationships to develop over time.
Our Mission
To provide older adults in Hong Kong with a residential community where cultural heritage, personal rhythm and genuine human connection shape everyday life — rather than institutional routine.
Dignity in Daily Life
Every resident's preferences, habits and pace are respected. We build the schedule around people, not the other way around.
Cultural Continuity
Cantonese traditions, seasonal festivals and living arts remain part of life at Tao Yuen — not as scheduled activities, but as the fabric of the community.
Transparency with Families
Open visiting, honest communication and a straightforward monthly pricing structure so families always feel informed and at ease.
The People Behind Tao Yuen
A small, experienced team who regard this work as a vocation rather than a job.

Chan Wai-Keung

Ng Siu-Fong
Resident Relations Manager
Siu-Fong is the first person families meet and the one they call when something needs attention. She ensures that communication between the community and families remains open, personal and unhurried.
How We Maintain Quality
The standards we hold ourselves to — in how the community is run, how residents are treated, and how families are kept informed.
SWD Registration
Tao Yuen operates in compliance with the Social Welfare Department's residential services guidelines for Hong Kong, reviewed on a regular basis.
Dietary Standards
Meals are prepared according to a balanced, nutritionally considered menu with options for dietary needs, reviewed quarterly with a registered nutritionist.
Resident Privacy
Personal information is handled strictly in line with Hong Kong's Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance. Residents' data is never shared without explicit consent.
Fire & Safety
The building meets all Fire Services Department requirements. Staff conduct regular emergency drills and all common areas are equipped with accessible safety equipment.
Staff Development
All team members complete structured orientation and ongoing training in elder-respectful communication, safeguarding and cultural sensitivity.
Resident Feedback
A monthly feedback process invites residents and families to share their experience. Outcomes are reviewed by the management team and acted upon promptly.
Senior Living in Hong Kong — What Tao Yuen Represents
Finding the right residential community for an older adult in Hong Kong takes careful thought. Families weigh location, the social environment, cultural fit, the quality of the daily routine and, perhaps most importantly, whether staff treat residents as individuals rather than occupants. These are exactly the considerations that shaped Tao Yuen from the outset.
Situated in the Mid-Levels — one of Hong Kong Island's more established and accessible hillside districts — the community brings together older adults who wish to remain socially engaged, culturally connected and comfortable, without requiring medical support. The setting is quieter than the city below but never isolated: access to Central, the Peak tram area and familiar neighbourhood streets is straightforward.
Tao Yuen's approach draws on decades of combined experience in community management, cultural programming and elder-focused residential care. The result is a community that values personal history, keeps Cantonese culture alive in practical ways and treats each month as an opportunity for residents to live well — at a pace entirely their own.
